Prince C-Nut - Book Devourer

My son's reading ability really took off about 14 months ago. Here's a clip I posted last September when he was 4.8 years old:

Since then he's been a real joy to *homeschool*. Whenever there's dead time, and I do have him awake for nearly 14 hours a day(!), and I think he needs to do something *educational*, I simply tell him to grab one of his library books and *read 3 chapters* or whatever. And magically off he goes - fully sedated by a book instead of a color TV or a Nintendo DS. Some days I may send him off to a quiet corner 5 or 6 different times; he reads nonstop from his backseat stockpile of books when in the car; PLUS he's allowed to read every night before bed almost to his heart's content.

All parents can relate to the wondrous feeling of seeing their kids asleep in bed at night. NEVER are they more adorable then at this unconscious end-of-the-long-day moment!

Well, when I see my son immersed in a book I'm similarly overwhelmed with joy. And I take great pains to never interrupt his concentration a la a sleeping baby.

I've been trying to get him to list each book he reads in his *Book's* Google Word Doc but he's so voracious, many have been missed. Nonetheless, here's a glimpse of what he's read:

I could probably go into my library account and grab the titles of the missing ones but that's a task for a less busy time in my life.

Have you read as many books as my 5.96 year old has in the past year or so?

I would venture to say only a professional book reader could touch his menu. Dang, boy.

He seriously read H.G. Wells? Unabridged? That's impressive!!!

I do see a hole in his education though. Where are the "Calvin and Hobbes" titles?

:)

(All three of my boys cut their teeth on those.)

Anne,

Those are Great Illustrated Clasics, abridged.

And some of those, way down on the list, were co-read with mom or dad a while ago.

Anne,

He did find a Far Side book and loved it.

I think his mother hid it on him, seriously.

Actually, I would come close. Last year I kept a book list and devoured 183 books in 365 days. It is a very interesting thing to keep a book list and look back on it. You should get him hooked on Library Thing or Good Reads, so he can track it himself and even write reviews for others.

If I didn't have to work, I'd spend all my time reading or at the library or book store.

Great job to your boy, might hold him up to my daughters as something to aspire to!

Me,

Wow, a book every 2 days!

Most people read a book a year or something tragic like that.

I'm beginning to think writing is more important than reading.

And I'm trying to figure out ways to incorporate that belief in my homeschooling.

Okay, well that makes more sense.

For an author you may not have heard about, you might want to try G.A. Henty. He lived during the nineteenth century and wrote the books initially for his own kids. They are great historical fiction and my boys love them. Would probably need to start out reading them together, they are not an "easy read" for a 6-year old but I predict he'll like them. And you might too. I started out reading them aloud during school-time but over the years have bought about 20 of them for my boys.

You can probably find some of these at the library. If you want to buy them, I found them cheapest through Library and Educational Services. As a "home-educator" you can order from them. Check it out.
